As an Officer

Join the Pakistan Army as an officer

Six commission routes - from the parade squares of PMA Kakul to direct graduate entry. Compare education, age and tests at a glance.

An officer’s commission is the Army’s leadership track. Whether you enter after intermediate or after a university degree, every route passes through the same gate: initial test → physical → medical → ISSB → final interview → PMA Kakul.

Your action plan

  1. Pick your route by education and age - the table above is your shortlist.
  2. Confirm physical standards on the physical test page and start training now.
  3. Register online or at your Selection Centre when the course is advertised.
  4. Prepare the initial test - officer courses weight intelligence questions heavily.
  5. After clearing, keep your ISSB documents ready and read the ISSB guide thoroughly.

What “commission” means

Commissioned officers hold the President’s Commission - starting as Second Lieutenant and rising through Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel and beyond. The journey begins with two years at the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul.

Officer pay, perks and career speed

A commissioned officer earns far more than the pay slip shows: subsidised housing and rations, free family medical care, children's education concessions, service and cafe facilities, and a pension for life after qualifying service. Promotion boards move a strong officer from Second Lieutenant to Major in roughly 10-12 years, with staff college, courses abroad and command appointments keeping the career steep. Choose the door by your education: the PMA Long Course stays the widest entry, the TCC adds a fully funded engineering degree, and graduate routes like DSSC Engineers or the SSRC take you straight into your specialist branch. The after intermediate and after graduation guides break that choice down further, and the ISSB guide covers the four days every officer candidate faces.

Two years at Kakul, then your regiment

Clear ISSB and the Pakistan Military Academy takes over. Cadet life runs on routine: up before the sun, physical training, drill on the parade square and classes that keep pace with any university in the country. The first months feel like they are breaking habits rather than building them; by the second year the same routine is producing officers. Where a cadet lands after passing out depends on course standing and the preference list each cadet submits - infantry, armour, artillery, engineers, signals and the services all draw from the same parade. Ask serving officers what shaped them and few mention ceremonies; they talk about the camps, the marches and the coursemates who would not let them fall behind.

Where officer applications go wrong

Most document-stage rejections are avoidable, and they follow the same patterns every year:

  • O-level and A-level students who never got IBCC equivalence. Convert your certificates before registration opens, not after.
  • Names that do not match the matric certificate. Spelling differences between CNIC and academic records send candidates home on document day.
  • Waiting for the last date. The registration portal slows down during closing week and the Army does not extend deadlines for a crashed connection.
  • Preparing only for the written paper. The final interview and the run end more campaigns than the test does; train for both from week one.
