What is ISSB?
The Inter Services Selection Board is the 4-day residential assessment every officer candidate faces at Kohat, Gujranwala, Malir (Karachi) or Quetta. There is no syllabus to memorise - the board observes how you think, lead and behave under pressure across three techniques: psychology, GTO tasks and interview.
The 4-day programme

| Day 1 | Screening | Intelligence tests (verbal + non-verbal) and group discussion. Roughly half the batch is screened out the same evening and sent home respectfully. |
| Day 2 | Psychology | Thematic Apperception Test (stories on pictures), Word Association (first reaction to words), Situation Reaction Test (60 situations), Self Description - then the deputy president’s interview. |
| Day 3 | GTO tasks | Group planning, progressive group tasks over obstacles, group discussion, lecturette (3-min talk), obstacle race, half group task, individual obstacles and command task. |
| Day 4 | Conference | Board members jointly review each candidate, a final short conference is held, and results are announced. Recommended candidates go to the Military Hospital for final medical. |

How to prepare honestly
- Practise speed-thinking: give yourself 10 seconds per word for Word Association - first thought, positive, one line.
- Read & speak daily: 3-minute talks on current topics train the lecturette and discussion rounds.
- Stay fit: individual obstacles reward upper-body strength and agility - train chin-ups, sprints and balance.
- Know yourself: your self-description, bio-data and interview answers must tell one consistent story.
Board stay is free - lodging, food and even a daily allowance are provided. Bring your call letter, original documents and sports gear as instructed.
